Challenge #4. Run 30 times in 30 days.

Post by Alex R on Sat Dec 05, 2009 10:00 am

    Yo

Here is the next one. It is not really as described as the rules are as follows.

    1. A run is defined as a single run of 20 minutes or more.

    2. Runs will be separated by the act of removing shoes from your feet and then putting them back on. The essence of this is to do things like run to the pool, swim then run home scoring 2 points. If you want to sit down on the road every 20 minutes and take your shoes off for extra points, you have issues Sad

    3. Bonus points are as follows so that recovery is still achieved.
    - Runs of 60-90 minutes = 2 points.
    - Runs of 90-120 minutes = 3 points.
    - Runs of 120+ minutes = 4 points.
    - Runs in a race or similar event attract an additional 1 point. For example a 93 minute Half Ironman run leg would be 3 for the duration + 1 for the race achieving 4 points.

    4. For the twist, a loss of 1 kilo in body weight = 1 point.

So, what do you win? Well membershhip to an exclusive group. If you achieve the 30 points in the 30 days you will become a member of the 'Awesome'. This means your forum profile will have this added as a custom title. If you are the first to 30, you will receive the forum title of 'Super Awesome'. If you achieve the most points in the 30 days, you achieve the forum title of what ever you want, no exceptions, swear words excepting. affraid

We start Monday December 21 2009 and finish Tuesday Jan 19 2010.

Just post your results as you see fit in this thread. Smack talk is encouraged.

That's a tough way to earn extra points!!!

I don't think it's equitable to say 1pt for each 20min run, but only 2 pts once you go over 90mins!! Ie, on that basis I could earn 4 pts if I stop and take my shoes off in an 85 mins run vs 2pts only for an 1:50hr run.

How about something along the lines of the rTSS algorithm, which gives points NOT on a linear basis, but on somewhat of an exponential basis for length of run?

Also, I'm very wary of competitions that encourage that frequency of running - every day - regardless of background. The potential injury risks some people may encounter in the name of scoring points rings major alarm bells to me.

Well crap on a stick Laughing I already look dorky enough running with a camelback, now I'll have to start taking my shoes off as well. Razz

    haha, yes. Smile

Remember it is a 'challenge' not a 'competition'. Like all challenges, there are risks otherwise they are just occurences.

An example week to make 7 points.

    Mon - Rest
    Tue - 40 min E pace
Wed - 20 min brick run
    Thur - 40 min E pace
Fri - 20 min brick run
    Sat - rest
    Sun - 120 min run.

Repeat. 7 points. This is the basic Cycos running week in the winter (loosely). If someone tginks they can do more points using the available bonus ststem, go for it. If you get hurt, stop, if you think you are going to get hurt, don't do it bbut it certainly is not a 'dangerous' concept for people who would be reading this site. I plan on taking 5 points through weight loss alone as I am 9 kilos up on the last marathon I ran and 5 up on Ironman weight Razz

How about a point scale like this...
    - Runs of 60-90 minutes = 2 points.
    - Runs of 90-120 minutes = 3 points.
    - Runs of 120+ minutes = 4 points.

I just think that 1 pt for 20mins up to 90mins doesn't reflect the associated effort.

should be bonuses/penalties for runs on xmas/new years eve/day Smile
Not sure which way to go, do you deserve a bonus for the commitment, or a penalty for being a sad individual and having no life, (hey smack talk is allowed dont attack me Smile )

I'm a huge fan of the ride on Christmas day Very Happy In the morning anyway.
Roads are empty and everyone else out there riding/running (yes there are some on the River Loop) is all smiles. Great vibe.
I'll see you out there. Better do a brick to get the run in Razz

I'm in. I look forward to this one. Good one for motivation. Something I seriously lack at the moment. I find that it really helps to kick start my marathon training for the New Year. Like the new points system. Means I don't have to take my shoes off so often! Razz
