Should I be quicker swimming in a 50m pool or a 25m pool? A year ago before I started swimming regularly I did a 50m TT in a 25m pool in a time of 43sec. Last Tuesday, after more than 6 months of regular swimming, I did a 50m TT in a 50m pool in a time of 42sec. I would have expected a much bigger improvement especially as I know I have become a much faster swimmer than I was a year ago.

Re: 50m vs 25m pool
For me a 25m pool is about 1min quicker for a 1500m TT (an unfit 28mins or so). So that is 4 secs per 100m, or 2 secs per 50m.

Same swim, within a couple of months, 25m vs 50m. 25m pool is quicker.

edited as I just realised that the two times are about 8 days apart!

Re: 50m vs 25m pool
Yeah, same. I find a 25m is at least 1 min quicker over the same distance. If I swim a time per distance in a 25m pool, I find it is nearly exactly the same as a wetsuit open water swim. This is why you see these crazy fast swim times on slow twitch. Firstly they are usually talking yards and do them in 25 yard (22.7 i think) pools. We did a couple of winters in the 25 yard pool and I was friggn Ian Thorpe (but straight). When we got back to the 50, I felt like I was going to drown. The extra depth in big pools I find is a little more mentally draining as the bottom does not apppear to slide by as fast.

25m is always faster because you get to push off the wall twice as often. Simple as that.

And for those who find the 25m pool faster do you tumble turn? I don't so not sure if it would make as much difference

Probably not as much benefit when you do an open turn Vs tumble turn, but you still get the speed & momentum boost from pushing off the wall.

Swam in one of those on the holidays thinking it was a 25, the 100m repeats at effort 7 just about killed me.
Have found out since if the pool is a 'memorial' pool it is likely 33 metres.

I don't (can't) do tumble turns. Still a 1min quicker in the 25m pool over 1500m.
